PROJECT UPDATE

Capital One Arena renovation reaches the street

Planned three-year modernization moves into its most visible phase

Construction on Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. has entered its most visible phase as crews shift from behind-the-scenes work to a comprehensive transformation of the building’s exterior. Home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the arena is in the midst of a three-year, approximately $800 million modernization that remains on schedule for completion before the start of the 2027-28 NBA and NHL seasons.

The current phase is centered on reshaping how the arena interacts with public space. Crews have begun removing portions of the existing exterior façade while constructing a dramatic new glass entrance along F Street, relocated closer to 7th Street to improve visibility and distribute crowds more efficiently. At the same time, the project is introducing new exterior cladding, expanded glazing, upgraded lighting and digital displays, and a sculptural illuminated veil that will wrap the upper portions of the building, creating a more unified architectural identity while strengthening the arena’s presence within the downtown streetscape.

Additional exterior improvements include wider sidewalks, enhanced pedestrian circulation, an accessible entrance on 6th Street, and upgrades to the Gallery Place atrium and surrounding public realm. Together, these changes are designed to improve arrival, wayfinding, accessibility, and the overall experience before fans ever step inside the venue. Construction activity, including scaffolding, overhead pedestrian protection, and temporary sidewalk detours, is now visible throughout the site as work progresses.

While much of the project’s attention has focused on new premium spaces and fan amenities inside the arena, the exterior transformation represents an equally significant investment in the building’s relationship with downtown Washington. By reimagining the arena’s public face, the project aims to reinforce Capital One Arena as both a premier sports and entertainment venue and a catalyst for the continued revitalization of the city’s downtown core.

B&D is serving as the District of Columbia’s representative for the Capital One Arena modernization, supporting the District’s oversight of the project and helping advance its long-term vision for downtown Washington.

"The leadership and information from B&D, and the clarity with which they provide it, brings added credibility to the process and ensures that a range of university stakeholders, including senior leadership and our board, are fully informed for – and confident in – their required decision making.”
