Why school districts must prioritize employee affordable housing
By Al Grazioli
California’s rising cost of living and housing crisis are straining school districts’ ability to attract and retain teachers and staff, jeopardizing the quality of education. Many educators spend a significant portion of their income on housing, with starting salaries in over half of the state’s districts unable to cover median rents without exceeding the “rent-burdened” threshold of 30% of income. Teacher turnover averages 12% annually, and classified employee turnover can reach 25% in some districts, with the issue being especially acute in schools serving higher proportions of low-income families.
